Why Study Portuguese?

Closer economic, trade and cultural ties are developing between Australia and Brazil, and never more so than in Queensland. Therefore, providing Australian students (future professionals), with a working knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese and its culture is a key part of furthering this developing relationship.

Portuguese is the seventh most spoken language in the world withmore than 220 million native speakers spread across Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe .

Like other languages, Portuguese has experienced a historical evolution, being influenced by many other languages and dialects, as it reached the form known today. Contemporary Portuguese comprises several dialects and sub-dialects and two internationally recognized standards (European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese).

Today, Brazil’s rich culture (music, food, cinema and sport) is matched by its growing weight as a global economic powerhouse. The past decade has seen the Brazilian economy, the largest in Latin America, enter a period of dynamic growth that’s pushed it to the forefront of international politics and trade. Brazil is now seen as more than just a tourist destination for the annual Carnaval festival – it’s no surprise then that the Portuguese language is also experiencing resurgence.

The University of Queensland recognises closer economic, trade & cultural ties are developing between Australia and Brazil, especially in Queensland. Providing students (future professionals) with a working knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese and its culture is fast becoming a strategic priority. Learning Portuguese will be key for many a UQ student’s international business career.
